There isn't too much conflict in the story, but the biggest thing would probably be Katie's favoritism of Neeley. You would think this would make Francie bitter towards others, and cause her to be hostile towards adults, but it's the exact opposite. She becomes very imaginative and sort of learns to take care of herself in a way. I think it allows her to grow as a person and find who she is.
Another problem would probably be the society they live in. Immigrants (ex. Jews) are treated badly, and so are poor people. The upper classes are ignorant to the problems going on around them, and people even still suffer to this day with the same things. However, through hard work and dedication, people overcome these obstacles and go on to do great things.
